The long rule of Vsevolod the Big Nest was the Golden Age of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. He was the most powerful of Russian princes of all time.

Background
Lived: 1154-1212.
Vsevolod III (the Big Nest) was the son of Yuri Dolgorukiy and half-brother of Andrey Bogolyubsky. When his father died, his mother Helene and young Vsevolod were exiled to Constantinople, where they were kindly welcomed by Emperor Manuel I.

Reign
Grand Prince Vsevolod III significantly strengthened the position of Vladimir. He subdued Novgorod and Ryazan and had influence over Kiev. He also fought successfully against the Volga Bulgars and the Polovetsy.

Vsevolod also promoted culture. Many churches were built, and many chronicles were written.

Family
Vsevolod Big Nest’s nickname arose from the fact that he had as many as 8 sons and 4 daughters.
