Rurik was the semilegendary first ruler of Russia. His dynasty ruled over Russia for the following 700 years.

Background
Lived: 830-879.
Rurik was a Viking warrior from Jutland from the tribe of the Rus. He established rule over Staraya Ladoga in Northern Russia.

The Legend
According to the Primary Chronicle, a history written in the 12th century, the princes of Novgorod refused to pay the Varangians tribute, drove them out beyond the sea, and set out to govern themselves.

After they had grown tired of fighting each other, they decided to invite Rurik back to govern over them and establish order.

Reign
Rurik arrived in 862 with his two brothers, Sineus and Truvor. Rurik came to rule the town of Novgorod, Sineus, the town of the Beloozero, and Truvor, the town of Izborsk. These areas were later united.

Death
Rurik died in 879, leaving behind his underage son Igor. Rurik’s companion, Oleg, possibly also a relative, was named regent.
