1894-1918 Empress of Russia.

The last Empress of Russia, the wife of Nicholas II. Her general unpopularity and her blind faith in Rasputin accelerated the tragic end of the Romanov dynasty.

Background
Lived: 1872-1918.
She was born Alix of Hesse. Her parents were Princess Alice of Great Britain and Louis IV of Hesse. Alix was well educated in London by her grandmother Queen Victoria of Great Britain.

Alexandra and Nicholas were deeply in love, but their parents initially opposed the marriage, thinking, she was not appropriate for the throne being too hysterical and charmless.

Empress
Nevertheless, their wedding took place in 1894 and the couple moved to Tsarskoe Selo. Alexandra gave birth to four daughters: Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia.

In 1904, Alexey, the long awaited son and heir to the throne was born. The doctors diagnosed him with hemophilia. Alexandra was in despair and deseperately sought help for her sick child. She turned to religious mysticism and superstition.

In 1905, Alix was introduced to an occultist monk Grigory Rasputin. He apparently had some success in relieving Alexey’s illness. Alix began to trust Rasputin completely and the monk grew extremely obsessed with power.

Death
When World War I broke out, Nicholas II moved to the front leaving Alexandra under influence of Rasputin. Rumours appeared that Alexandra had betrayed Russia in favour of her native Germany. In 1916 a group of noblemen murdered Rasputin.

On 15 March 1917, Nicholas II abdicated and the family was put under house arrest in Yekaterinburg. On 17 July 1918, the entire family was shot by the Bolsheviks.
