Alexey Nikolayevich Romanov

Apr 03, 2015

Tsarevich of Russia.

The only son and heir of Russian Emperor Nicholas II. That sick child with hemophilia was the only hope for the Romanov dynasty to continue. Alexey and his family were all shot by the Bolsheviks.

Background
Lived: 1904-1918.
By the time Alexey was born, his parents had already four daughters but not yet an heir. The boy was desperately awaited because the dynasty was at stake.

Life
Alexey was diagnosed with hemophilia, the genetic disease that prevents blood from clotting. That “royal disease” had come from Queen Victoria to several of her children and spread to the courts of Spain, Germany and Russia.

As there was no cure, Alexey’s mother Alexandra turned to occultists and mystics including Grigory Rasputin, who seemed to have some healing power over his son.

Death
Nicholas II abdicated on 15 March 1917 also in the name of his son Alexey. The Romanov family was arrested thereafter and were kept under house arrest in Yekaterinburg for over a year.

On 17 March 1918, the entire family was shot in the cellar of the Ipatiev House. Alexey was only 14.
