1667-1671
It was one of four popular rebellions against tsardom between 1600-1800. It was not the biggest nor the most dangerous, but it was the most popular and romanticized.

“Rebellion of Stenka Razin”by Vasily Surikov (1906)
Background
The looting and pillaging Cossack bands have been part of the Russian history from the very beginning. Stenka Razin became one of their many leaders in the early 1660s.
Rebellion
Stenka Razin had been in front of the Cossack campaign against the Turks and the Crimean Khans in 1662. He had also started robbing tsarist ships in the Lower Volga area and the Caspian Sea in 1667.
When Razin planned a new campaign to Volga, he was joined by many outlaws and serfs, and his campaign evolved into a public rebellion against the tsar.
Razin moved up along the Volga River and conquered important towns one by one until, finally, in Simbirsk he was faced by a large tsar’s army led by Prince Yuri Dolgorukov.
Death
Stenka Razin was wounded in Simbirsk and he fled to the Don area. There he was betrayed by a group of fellow Cossacks who gave him to the tsar.
He was brought to Moscow in a cage and hanged, not far from the Moscow Kremlin.
