Statesman.

Nikita Khrushchev’s Prime Minister. He backed Khrushchev’s power struggle after Stalin’s death, but betrayed him just two years later and was removed.

Background
Lived: 1895-1975.
Nikolay Bulganin was born in Nizhni Novgorod in the family of an office clerk. He joined the communist party in 1917 and thereafter became a member of the Cheka. In the 1920s, Bulganin held several administrative positions connected to the economy. He was a hardline follower of Stalin and he had a successful career.

Career
After Stalin’s death Bulganin became the Minister of Defence (1953-55). He supported Khrushchev in his competition against Malenkov and was promoted by Khrushchev to be the new Prime Minister (1955-58).

Bulganin joined Khrushchev in most of his foreign trips and they became famous in foreign press as “the B and K show”.

Fall from power
In 1957 Molotov led the party fraction, later called the “Anti-Party Group”, that attempted to overthrow Khrushchev. Although considered deeply loyal to Khrushchev, Bulganin hesitated. When the attempt failed, his party members were expelled from the party.

Bulganin first retained his position, but the next year he was deposed and also deprived of his rank of Marshal.
