9-14 Sept 1917

An attempt by General Kornilov to overthrow the Provisional Government, that was a disappointment to everyone. He represented the most conservative part of society who wanted to restore monarchy.

Background
The new Prime Minister Alexander Kerensky, who came to office after the July Days, was only a compromise. He had to find balance between the radical and conservative parties. He failed on both sides.

Kornilov Affair
In August 1917, Kerensky decided to interfere with the commandment of the Russian army. He replaced Brusilov with the popular General Lavr Kornilov as the Supreme Commander of the Russian Army.

In August Kornilov understood he had been asked to restore order in Petrograd and moved his troops towards the capital. Kerensky was frightened and sacked the General. Kornilov, who had nothing to lose, decided not to stop.

In these days there were many who wanted order be restored. The Government was too weak and Kornilov felt it was worth taking a chance. But he had overestimated people’s support to such counterrevolution.

Results
The coup failed, because the rest of the army did not change sides. Agitators of the Soviets managed to talk Kornilov’s soldiers out of fighting before they reached the capital.
