According to the Primary Chronicle, Igor was only a child when his father Rurik died in 879. Oleg, a close associate and possibly a relative of Rurik, was made regent. He took Igor with him on his many campaigns to Smolensk, Kiev and later, to the Byzantine Empire.

After Oleg’s death in 912, Igor became the all-powerful ruler of Kievan Rus’. He conquered the lands between the Dniester and Danube and carried out two campaigns against Constantinople. The first was a fiasco, the second ended with a treaty favorable to Kiev.

Death
Igor was killed by the Drevlyans when he appeared to be too greedy in collecting tribute. His body was torn to pieces. Igor’s nickname was “The Old”.
