Filaret

Apr 03, 2015

Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.

He was the regent and actual ruler of Russia on behalf of his son Michael I Romanov. His rule was successful as law and order was restored in Russia.

Background
Lived 1553-1633.
Filaret’s real name was Fyodor Romanov. He was a prominent Russian boyar in the court of tsar Boris Godunov. He also went through a temporary disgrace that fell to all of Godunov’s supporters.

Regency
When boyars were actively debating who will be the next tsar, Filaret proved to be the best negotiator. His father Nikita Romanov had been tsar Fyodor’s maternal uncle. Filaret’s son Mikhail was young and therefore seemed like a safe choice.

Although Mikhail I and his father were officially co-rulers, Filaret often did not discuss matters with him.

His greatest achievement was the chaining of peasants to their lands and restoration of diplomatic relations with neighboring countries.
