Jan 1918

After the abdication of the tsar, the Constituent Assembly was universally agreed to be the only rightful body to decide the form of government of Russia. The Bolsheviks dissolved it by force.

Meeting of the Russian Constituent Assembly In the Tauride Palace In Petrograd (January 1918)

Background
The promise to call upon the first truly democratic legislative body in Russia had been in all political parties’ agendas. The Constituent Assembly was to decide what kind of political government was best for Russia. Therefore it was not easy for Bolsheviks to ignore that public expectation.

Events
The elections were held in November 1917 and they were won by the SRs. Bolsheviks got just 1/4 of the votes. In January 1918, when the newly elected assembly finally summoned in Tauride Palace, the hall was full of Bolshevik soldiers drinking vodka, shouting and waving with guns.

After a long working day and night of pointless discussions, an armed guard famously walked in the hall and said “The guard is tired, I propose that you close the meeting and let everybody go home”.

It was never allowed to came together again.
