Events
On 22 January 1905, a priest named Grigory Gapon led some 150,000 people towards the Winter Palace. They marched peacefully holding icons and singing “God Save the Tsar”. The people wanted to give the tsar their petition. Nicholas II himself was not at the palace.
Tensions were high, someone fired a shot and the guards of the Winter Palace ended up shooting at the panicking crowd. About 200 died and 800 were wounded. The myth that the tsar in fact cares for his people, had come to an abrupt end.

The direct consequences of Bloody Sunday were the events of the Revolution of 1905. A wave of vicious strikes and upheavals followed everywhere around Russia. Peasants began burning manors and anarchy took over.
