Anton Denikin was from a family of humble background. He was an ambitious and talented student at the General Staff Academy that he graduated with excellent results.
Denikin participated in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I. He ranked Lieutenant-General and was the Commander-in-chief of the South-Western army Group in 1916.
Russian Civil War
After the Bolshevik Revolution, Denikin joined General Lavr Kornilov’s Volunteer Army. After Kornilov’s death, Denikin took over and combined together the White Armed Forces of the South.
Denikin then planned to seize Moscow. His offensive toward Moscow was initially very successful. By August 1919, they were just 400 km from the capital. Denikin’s army was defeated near Orel and slowly began to withdraw.
Death
Denikin became disillusioned about the war and passed on his army to baron Pyotr Wrangel. He left Sevastopol in March 1920 and left to France. There he lived for the next 27 years until his death in 1947 in the USA.
