Stalin’s close associate. Mikoyan was a great political survivor, and very unique as such. He was in the top Communist hierarchy during Stalin, Khrushchev and Breznev.

Background
Lived: 1895-1978.
Mikoyan was Armenian, son of a carpenter. He became a revolutionary and was active in the Caucasus area.

Career
Mikoyan was an avid supporter of Stalin and became the member of his inner circle. He was promoted Commissar of Trade in 1926, being the youngest commissar at that time. A member of the Politburo from 1926-66.

He became the Comissar of Food Supplies in 1934 and introduced some innovations in that field, he began the canned food industry. During World War II, he was responsible for transport of supplies.

After Stalin
After Stalin’s death he correctly put his bet on Khrushchev and retained his high positions. He followed Khrushchev’s example to become a great critic of Stalin’s black deeds. He was promoted as the Deputy Premier.

In the 1962 Cuban Missile crisis, Mikoyan had the diplomatic task of explaining Castro the decision to withdraw.

Death
After retirement from political life in 1975, he died in 1978. He had been in power “From Ilych (Lenin) to Ilych (Breznev) without heart attack or stroke”. He was a great dodger who could “cross the Red Square with no umbrella and still not get wet”.
