Statesman.

He was the chief advisor of foreign policy in the time of Empress Elizabeth. He was one of the best diplomats in Europe at that time.

Background
Lived: 1693-1768.
Alexey Bestuzhev-Ryumin was born in Moscow in a noble family. Peter the Great sent him to various European courts to practice diplomacy. He was at the service of George I, the king of Great Britain, and many others.

Grand Chancellor
When Elizabeth came to power, she immediately invited Alexey Bestuzhev-Ryumin to her court and made him his Grand Chancellor in 1744. She trusted the Russian Foreign policy entirely to him.

At that time, the whole Europe was dealing with the aggressive policy of Prussian Frederick the Great. It was in the interest of Russia to seek alliance with Great Britain and Austria.

The Seven Years’ War
However, Alexey Bestuzhev-Ryumin did not succeed in avoiding the British-Prussian alliance and that led to the Seven Years’ War. Lack of success at the beginning of the war contributed to the downfall of his career. Bestuzhev was arrested and deported in 1758.

Catherine the Great
He was later restored by Catherine the Great, but never did he become so powerful again.
