Afanasy Ordin-Nashchokin was born in a poor landowner’s family in Pskov. He received a very good education of mathematics, Greek and Latin.
Afanasy joined the army and became a governor in western Russia. He was also morally incorruptible and intellectually way beyond his colleagues.
Career
Ordin-Naschokin’s diplomatic abilities were first revealed in the Russo-Swedish War (1656-58). He was the chief negotiator and the Valiesar Peace Treaty (1658) retained all the conquered Livonian lands to Russia.
The highlight of his career was the Treaty of Andrusovo (1667), that gave Russia the town of Smolensk and large quantities of land. Afanasy Ordin-Nashchokin was promoted boyar and later appointed Foreign Minister and the first Chancellor of Russia.
Afanasy undertook several measurements to stimulate openness and trade with the West. He built ships and established the first postal system of Russia. His reforms paved way to the innovations of Peter the Great.
Fall from power
In 1672, Ordin-Naschokin’s jealous rivals had him deposed and sent to monastery in Pskov. There he lived a quiet life until his death in 1680.
